Pick of the Week: Neal Conway featuring Taihisha "Choices" (Dagostar Records CD Promo)

Details
Written by: Mike Fossati
Created: 25 August 2012
Neal Conway featuring Taihisha - Choices Spirit of House proudly presents the phenomenal "Choices" produced by Neal Conway (legendary composer and musician behind many of the timeless Basement Boys classics) and performed by songstress Taihisha Grant in grand style. The masterly orchestrated "Choices" is inspired by Neal Conway's unforgettable underground flavored sound from the early 90's and combines Taihisha's incomparable heartfelt vocals with infectious rhythms and sublime keys - a timeless soulful house gem guaranteed to send shivers down your spine and make you yearn for more... But it doesn't end here as an uber hot selection of remixes by the likes of Aron Lee, DJ Ant B, Master T, Phat Frank, Sal Negro and Neal Conway himself is included, each one adding his distinctive soulful touch to the song to give you plenty of choices to work the floor. An essential release by no means to be missed...

Ladybird - Ladybird Remixed

Ever since we received a promo copy of Ladybird's self-titled full length album (which was in February of this year), we can't get enough of this masterpiece... Now Peng Records present "Ladybird Remixed" featuring brand new interpretations of two of the wonderful songs featured on the album, namely "A lullaby" and "highlight my life" - and what a musical treat this is... First we have Dolls Combers masterly orchestrated remix of "A lullaby" oozing with their beloved jazzed inspired sound, next Andy Compton blesses us with his phenomenal laidback broken beat rendition. This is followed by BitterSuite's soulful yet deeper than deep remixes of "Highlight my life" which feature delectable melodies over infectious rhythms. Essential...

From the Vault: Jamiroquai "Emergency on planet earth" (Masters at Work Remixes)(Sony Soho Square 12" Promo, 1994)

Jamiroquai - Emergency on planet earth (MAW Remixes) There was a time when vinyl was ruling the world and DJ's would carry literally hundreds of records to a gig. This was also the time when 'promos' were only made available to DJ's (and those who were connected to the right people); of course there was kind of a 'black market' for fans and record collectors to buy them for good money. Looking back, one of the most memorable and rare promos we managed to get our hands on dates back to 1994 when Sony UK released a very limited promo 12" (said to have had 200 copies pressed only) of Master at Work remixes of Jamiroquai's "Emergency on planet earth" which instantly became highly sought after - certainly no surprise as we talk about Masters at Work on their best with these Nu-Yorican infused interpretations of an already great song... To this day, this is a hard to find gem and fans and collectors are willing to pay quite lots of money for a copy since some of the included mixes are not available elsewhere.

Pick of the Week: KlevaKeys and Michelle Weeks "Hold of me" (House Keys Records CD Promo)

KlevaKeys and Michelle Weeks - Hold of me

Legendary house music diva Michelle Weeks and KlevaKeys (Adam Agnilleri) team up to present "Hold of me", a marvelous soulful production featuring the inimitable sultry vocals by Michelle Weeks alongside grand keys over smooth yet spell binding rhythms in the 'Original Mix'. The 'Alternative Piano Mix' turns up the heat with a precious piano and a fiercely stompin' backing, while the 'Sunday Morning Mix' relaxes the vibe with a broken beat inspired backdrop leading the way for the vocals and heavenly keys. Each of these versions is brilliant and guaranteed to send shivers down your spine - believe us, it is next to impossible to pick a favorite... In other words, "Hold of me" is soulful house at its best, its a timeless gem by no means to be missed.

ZuluMafia featuring Zethu - Falling in your arms

Only a few weeks after ZuluMafia Digital presented their inaugural release "Give me a chance", the label returns with another timeless jewel guaranteed to make you yearn for more. Once again, ZuluMafia (Simphiwe Nhlapho) is pulling out all the stops on the utterly deep'n'soulful "Falling in your arms", a marvelous production featuring sultry vocals by up and rising songstress Zethu and glorious keys over smooth yet thrilling percussive rhythms in the 'Original Mix'. The 'Zulu Down To Earth Mix' gives the song a warmer organic feel, while the 'Zulu Quiet Days Mix' relaxes the vibe to give the song a wonderful laidback sun drenched touch.

From the Vault: Underground Solution "Luv dancin'" (Strictly Rhythm Records 12", 1990/1991)

The Underground Solution - Luv dancin

In our humble opinion, simply one of the best, if not THE best ever, Roger Sanchez production, released on the legendary Strictly Rhythm label. "Luv dancin" is an unforgettable deep sexy classic that is truly hypnotizing and spell binding yet melodious and soulful, originally put out as an instrumental track in 1990, featuring a vocal sample (which informs the title of the track) taken from the all-time classic "Is it all over my face" by Loose Joints. Then (to be precise in 1991) came the remix featuring a soothing female vocal by Jasmine which took the track to a whole new level. One of the true timeless house music classic of all time...

Soulful House Journey - Mixed by Hector Romero King Street's acclaimed "Soulful House Journey" series goes into the fourth round (the first three volumes were courtesy of Frankie Feliciano, Sean McCabe and Groove Assassin), with none other than Def Mix legendary DJ and producer Hector Romero adding his magic touch to grace us with an ingenious masterly sequenced and blended continuous mix featuring an eclectic selection of soulful yet infectious tunes (both vocal and instrumental) including gems such as the massive Yass mix of "Callin' you lord" by Johnny Dangerous featuring Kenny Bobien or the slammin' Alix Alvarez remix of "One desire" by Barbara Tucker & Tuccillo; and of course he pays homage to his Def Mix fellows with the inclusion of a few Brooklyn Friends (David Morales) productions and the Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper remix of "Return to love" by DJ Vivona & Joi Cardwell. As usual the package also includes the tracks in unmixed format, and you even get a couple of bonus tracks.
